Manager – Lumber Procurement

Reporting to the CFO, the Manager, Lumber Procurement is responsible for sourcing and procuring lumber for this clients Cross-Laminated Timber manufacturing and Access Mat manufacturing facilities in Western Canada and the US South.

Accountabilities: Operational:

  • Ensure all work is performed in a safe manner and has a complete understanding of safety protocols including emergency stop buttons, power switches and proper lockout procedures
  • Ensures appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is used properly, is inspected regularly and is maintained
  • Ensure the QC process, controls, documentation and team have all the training and tools required to work safely and effectively
  • Maintain relationships with current vendors while developing relationships with new mills and lumber distributors to optimize quality, cost and inventory levels
  • Use brokers to purchase lumber based on futures market conditions for projects up to 12 months in advance
  • Forecast and report on lumber-driven cash flow requirements to the CFO. Work to streamline inbound raw material deliveries to reflect production demand
  • Work with the production management team and Quality Control Managers to develop lumber grades with suppliers that provide a balance of price point and recovery
  • Analyze and report on lumber market conditions to Executive team
  • Maintain and develop lumber dashboards visualizing historical, current, and future trends in the market
  • Provide accurate and timely job-costing quotes for all lumber to the Sales Team; qualify quotes based on market analysis, job volume, and timeline
  • Develop all internal strategic lumber purchasing strategies to ensure quality, budgets, and project timelines are met
  • Communicate with operations personnel to ensure lumber is meeting the quality standards of its intended us

Education and experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Wood Science, Commerce, Business Administration or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience with trading or analyzing commodity markets, both futures and physicals
  • Minimum 5 years’ risk management experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ logistics experience
  • Working knowledge of continental North America intermodal freight market
  • Working knowledge of FSC and SFI environmental chain of custody programs
  • Working knowledge of both Southern United States and Canadian lumber markets
  • Familiar with engineered wood manufacturing and the Mass Timber industry
  • Experienced in secondary lumber manufacturing (re-manufacturing)
  • Lumber grading ticket
