Summary:

Reporting to the Plant General Manager, the Safety Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining the One Right Way of doing things and a safety visions that embodies a Culture of Care direction. Working closely with the plant management team and production, the Safety Manager is responsible for the organization and execution of corrective and preventative safety activities with the overall objection to drive an incident free plant and return our associates home safe each day.

Accountabilities: Strategic:

  • Creates and promote a safe environment for the production and erection of structurally sound wood buildings by promoting a Culture to Care where health and safety come first
  • Contributes to maintaining market leadership position by ensuring safe, efficient manufacturing of quality products
  • Supports this client’s goal to consistently fill manufacturing capacity
  • Establishes, leads and demonstrates “One Right Way”
  • Consistently strives to meet or exceed prescribed targets (i.e. safety, operational efficiency, schedule)
  • Commits to ongoing knowledge and skills development
  • Shares skills and abilities with other associates to maximize productivity and promote teamwork

Accountabilities: Operational:

  • Ensures all work is performed in a safe manner and has a complete understanding of safety protocols including emergency stop buttons, power switches and proper lockout procedures
  • Performs job hazard analysis and ergonomic risk assessments; creates plans to reduce risk
  • Performs incident investigations using 8D process, with the focus on root cause, corrective and preventative actions and verification
  • Creates and maintains a safety matrix and database to support all necessary safety training outlined by the client and OHSA standards
  • Manages workers compensation claims and aims to reduce costs by working closely with insurance carriers and state authorities in addition to this client’s supervisors and managers
  • Managers all claims from accident report to return of worker for modified duty and claim closure
  • Reviews planned changes and new equipment prior to receipt through a Management of Change (MOC) process
  • Approves or recommends changes location/relocation of equipment, facilities, safety designs, and processes. Incorporate Design for Safety and Design for Environment principals. Incorporate Design for Safety and Design for Environment principals.
  • Develops and implements effective test programs for the identification, prevention and control of occupational injuries and illnesses using Hierarchy of Controls methodology
  • Maintains accurate OSHA 300 log
  • Accompanies visiting inspectors and reports findings
  • Administers the plant hazard communication program, including maintaining up to date SDS’s effective identification and approval of all materials, chemicals, inventory and related training and education programs.
  • Reviews all testing and support operations to assure ongoing safety; establishes safety performance metrics, both leading and lagging indicators
  • Develops and implements audit programs to review and assure compliance with applicable health and safety standards
  • Builds and maintains the Safety Management System (SMS) database and report on; nonconformance, environmental spills, work observations, compliance obligations, root cause analysis, near misses, training management, audit management and incident management
  • Coordinates and administers the Environmental Programs following corporate guidelines and Federal, State and Local requirements

Education, Experience and Physical Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree; occupational safety/industrial hygiene or related field preferred
  • Minimum 6 years’ experience in a manufacturing/test or construction environment; 2 years in a supervisory role
  • Experience in a sawmill or heavy industrial environment preferred
  • Experience in accident investigation, analysis and corrective action planning
  • Experience in administering a hazardous communication program, including leading and managing an emergency response team
  • Experience with OSHA, DEP, EPS, NFPA, DEP and AWRA regulations and compliance
  • Experience preparing and presenting EHS training and recordkeeping
  • Ability to be proactive, follow up and follow through to ensure safety compliance for current and future activities
