Traditionally, ‘power’ in the energy sector has been a byword for ‘stability’. The sector is less reliant on subsidy support than renewable energy and is less exposed to oil price fluctuations, protecting them from market swings to some extent.
The global power sector is in good health according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). According to their statistics global energy demand increased by 4% in 2018 with low-carbon generation expanding by 6%. There are still climate challenges that the power industry needs to address though, with 42% of all energy-related CO2 emissions coming from the sector in 2018.
Gas-fired power generation increased by 4% in 2018 thanks to growth in China and the United States, while globally, coal power generation increased by 3% in 2018, and remains the world’s largest source of power at 38% of overall generation.
Despite that growth, the carbon intensity of power generation declined by 1.3% in 2018 to an estimated 478 gCO2/kWh thanks to increases in renewable and nuclear power generation.
