Name: Shannon George
Title: Senior Technical Recruiter
Region: Calgary, Canada
Time with company: Since August 2018
What do you do at Energy Resourcing?
I am a Senior Technical Recruiter for various industry sectors, including engineering for oil and gas, mining, manufacturing and renewable energy. I manage several accounts and typically look for mid to senior level, hard-to-find candidates for contract and permanent positions.
Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?
I have several roles that I’m currently working on right now: a project engineer in Calgary in the renewable sector, a purchaser in British Colombia for a manufacturing company and an environmental engineer in the US.
How did you get into your current career?
I completed a HR program in college and moved to Calgary in 2005. I started off working in trades/industrial recruitment, which is high volume and very fast-paced, before transitioning into engineering recruitment in 2009.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of this job is the satisfaction of helping someone find a new position or a client fill a role that they haven’t been able to in a long time. At the end of the day, it’s a people business; you can ensure people find great roles.
What challenges have you had to overcome to get to where you are today?
Recruitment is a tough job at times. It can be stressful, and you’ll always deal with changing market conditions. You need to have a lot of patience. It’s very rewarding and worth the effort in the end.
Any words of wisdom you live by? / Inspirational moments that shaped you? / Advice to young recruiters/HR/payroll?
Always try and keep a level mindset. Don’t get too caught up in the emotional highs and lows, which can be daily in this position. If you put in the work on a consistent basis, the rewards will come. Try and add value to candidates and clients whenever you can.
What keeps you at Energy Resourcing?
The people here are good to work with. We promote a culture where teamworking is key. I also have great clients that hire people in different areas of the country, which keeps it interesting.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I’m an active person who enjoys the outdoors. I like to work out at the gym after work. On weekends, you can find me hiking, biking or playing sports.
If you hadn’t gotten into your current career…what would you have become?
Probably a physical education teacher or a police officer.
What was the last book you read?
I don’t typically read a lot, but it’s something I’d like to start doing more.
Film you watched?
Top Gun Maverick.
Music you listened to?
I like Rock or Country music.
