Name: Sean MacGloin
Title: Director – Europe & Global Growth
Region: London, United Kingdom
Time with company: Since July 2011
What do you do at Energy Resourcing?
My job title is Director – Europe & Global Growth, but what I do is to encourage, mentor, develop, and organise a team of highly capable people to build strong businesses for us in Germany, The Netherlands and Sweden. Whenever possible, I also aim to promote solutions for our clients and spot opportunities that will enable the further development of the Energy Resourcing Group.
How did you get into your current career?
I had a relative working in the energy sector on projects for Shell, Marathon, Chevron, etc. He worked as a contractor via his own company. I needed some holiday work during university to pay off the costs of my excessive socialising! His agency offered me six weeks’ work to see if someone young would take to recruiting for mechanical engineers, project engineers, cost engineers and other disciplines. I guess I must have done something right when I graduated since they offered me a permanent position. I never looked back.
Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?
Our European businesses are still at a relatively early stage of their maturity, so at any given moment there tend to be a few projects running concurrently. Our focus right now is on ensuring that we have positioned ourselves correctly to support the business in the months and years ahead for some of the breaking major energy transition projects.
What’s the best part of your role?
I’ve always been hugely impressed by the way teams come together to deliver large projects. I enjoy being involved in providing people at the front end and then watching it all come together during design, construction, commissioning and start-up. I love the reminiscing and war stories that people reflect on over their time on a project.

What is the most challenging part of your role?
Over the years I have been involved in several start-ups of different sorts, either in the UK or internationally. Although it is a necessity to remain positive and optimistic, it can be difficult at times not to go get a little anxious when the financial results come through at the end of the month, and the numbers are in the red!
Any words of advice for young graduates?
Press hard on the accelerator; life is not a dress rehearsal. In the early stages of your career, soak up as much knowledge and embrace as many experiences as you can. It will be fun and put you in good stead further down the line.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I’ve always had a lot of passion for sports. I’ve been taking swimming lessons to improve my technique! I enjoy watching my beloved Tottenham Hotspur at our fabulous new stadium and play golf off a handicap that is far too high given how many years I have been playing.

What was the last book you read?
I’m at the tail end of reading ‘The Night Manager’ by John Le Carre. I’ve also been watching the TV series on catch-up via BBC iPlayer.
Film you watched?
After recommending ‘Cinema Paradiso’ in our fortnightly virtual coffee and catch up, I decide to watch it again after many years. It still tugs pretty hard at the heartstrings!
Music you listened to?
I’ve been in love with Debbie Harry since the age of ten. If it’s not Blondie I have on Spotify, then it will be other tunes from the 80s and 90s across a reasonably wide range of genres; Luther Vandross, Curtis Mayfield, Pulp, and The Stone Roses are all favourites. My first cousin was in the band Madness – he wrote the lyrics to their song ‘Our House’. Anytime I hear it instantly takes me back to fond memories of his parent’s house when I was a young boy. Michael Kiwanuka is a more recent discovery; he has a strong social message wrapped up in some lovely melodic tunes.
Are you looking for a recruitment service provider with integrity?
Energy Resourcing provides highly educated and experienced project management, engineering, technical and support personnel to high CAPEX-complex projects, all within the energy, chemicals and resources sectors. Our personnel contribute through all stage gates, from FEED through detailed design, construction, commissioning, start-up and operations.
