Meet the team: Ryan Hill

2023.04.19 Ryan Hill

Name: Ryan Hill

Title: Managing Director

Region: Sydney, Australia

Time with company: Since February 2020

What do you do at Energy Resourcing?

I’m the Managing Director with the responsibility of leading, supporting and serving the talented team at Energy Resourcing.

I work with the business to set our strategic direction, optimise our operating model, provide growth and development opportunities for our people, monitor our assurance and governance processes, and ensure we consistently deliver an exceptional experience to all our stakeholders.

How did you get into your current career?

I qualified as a chartered accountant before moving into mergers and acquisitions and corporate advisory roles. This experience gave me the opportunity to move into new growth roles supporting the operationalisation of strategic initiatives across the Worley Group.

My desire to move closer to the day-to-day activities of the business and get greater hands-on operational experience led me to my previous operational roles. The opportunity to lead Energy Resourcing, albeit in an industry I hadn’t worked in before, excited and challenged me.

Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?

I’m supporting the owners of several of our strategic initiatives. The Energy Resourcing experience, our way of working, is something I am very passionate about and am spending time thinking and working through, with help from others around the business.

What’s the best part of your role?

Working with leaders across the business to provide opportunities for our people to develop and grow. I thrive on engaging with and learning from individuals from around the world.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

When required, making the hard decisions which impact people, their roles and careers.

Any words of advice for young graduates?

Constantly look for opportunities to challenge and develop yourself. Say yes to opportunities that arise and be conscious that no career is a linear path. Be curious, ask lots of questions and be willing to work outside of your comfort zone – that’s where personal growth happens. I’d also suggest engaging a mentor(s) that you trust to be a sounding board and support your career journey.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I’m very fortunate to live on the northern beaches of Sydney, a beautiful part of the world. I love spending time with my family outdoors, either at the beach, in the bush, walking and exploring or on a skiing holiday.

I also enjoy spending time in the ocean, either swimming, surfing or volunteer lifesaving. Outside of these, I enjoy playing golf, watching my local rugby and AFL teams and having a braai (South African BBQ) and socialising with friends.

However, the reality of my current stage of life is that I spend most of my free time driving my three kids around Sydney to their various sports activities!

What was the last book you read?

‘Collision Course’ by William Sposato and Hans Greimel. The book charts the rise and fall of Carlos Ghosn who led the Nissan Renault Alliance and was later arrested for charges of financial misdemeanours in Japan and escaped the country prior to facing trial.

Film you watched?

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ – absolutely loved it! How much I enjoyed the movie may be linked to where we watched it – the outdoor cinema overlooking the Sydney harbour including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge with my wife!

Music you listened to?

I’m very much a chilled music kind of guy. Sydney has had an amazing run of concerts over the summer. We went to the Ed Sheeran concert which was phenomenal and the Vance Joy concert on the Opera House stairs – was off the charts!
