Meet the team: Robert Caldwell

2023.05.09 Robert Caldwell

Name: Robert Caldwell

Title: Recruitment Specialist

Region: Aberdeen, United Kingdom

Time with company: Since September 2021

What do you do at Energy Resourcing?

I am a Recruitment Specialist covering disciplines such as civil/structural engineering as well as HSE and Risk within the assurance division. My main role is to source, screen and present candidates to clients and in doing so, look to fill vacancies across several different roles, both on a contract and permanent basis.

How did you get into your current career?

Prior to working in recruitment, I worked in customer support roles within the IT/printing solutions sector and made the transition into recruitment in 2019, working as a Trainee Recruiter/Administrator. I then moved into a Recruitment Consultant role in 2021.

Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?

The beauty of this role is that you are working on an array of projects all the time. Recently, I have worked on roles supporting North Sea oil and gas projects as well as international gigafactory and carbon capture projects.

What’s the best part of your role?

I would say talking to candidates about the projects that a client is working on. With it being such a competitive market, it’s something that I enjoy discussing with candidates, and it can be a good differentiator when they are looking for work.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

I would say when a candidate rejects an offer or withdraws from a role you’ve submitted them for. There’s a lot of frustration when this happens, however, it’s important to remember that it is all part and parcel of the role. You can’t dwell too much on it and move on. I think having resilience is very important when dealing with these types of situations.

Any words of advice for young graduates?

I would say to plan ahead. Your last year of university is certainly a busy and stressful year; however, I think it’s good to set aside some time and get advice on your next steps before you graduate. It’s also a good idea to build things like a LinkedIn profile and your network so that you have an online presence to introduce yourself to potential future employers.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like to be reasonably active and play five-a-side football once a week. I also try to do some running over the spring and summer months.

I enjoy spending time with my wife and my dog Archie, whether that’s going out for nice walks locally or further afield as well as having nights in or the odd, nice meal out – usually followed by an espresso martini!

What was the last book you read?

‘High Rise’ by J.G Ballard.

Film you watched?

‘The Whale’ – very powerful and a great performance from Brendan Fraser.

Music you listened to?

I have been listening to some of Pete Tong’s albums with the Heritage Orchestra. I like the way they have adapted some dance classics and given it a more chilled feel.
