What do you do at Energy Resourcing?
I am the Finance and Operations Controller for Energy Resourcing North America. I oversee the finance, operations and payroll functions for the Canadian and United States locations, which essentially means I do a little bit of everything.
Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?
I just finished working with the systems assessment team to identify a single, integrated operating system to be implemented across all Energy Resourcing locations. I’m also working with another group to cleanup and consolidate our files to a new SharePoint site.
How did you get into your current career?
I worked in public practice audit and assurance for years and decided I wanted to make the change to industry. I started looking for companies that supported my values and career progression and ended up at Energy Resourcing.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is solving problems! We’re often presented with a challenge from a client or a contractor and required to work as a global team to come up with a solution.
What challenges have you had to overcome to get to where you are today?
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced in my career has been learning when to say no, and setting boundaries. In the finance and accounting industry it’s very normal to work long hours and burnout is far too common. I realised that in order to be my best at work and at home I needed to be honest about my workload and what I could feasibly accomplish.
Any words of wisdom you live by?
Just because something has always been done a certain way doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best way.
What keeps you at Energy Resourcing?
There are lots of reasons I stay at Energy Resourcing! I love the flexibility working from home allows, the great people I get to collaborate with daily, and the constant challenges that keep me sharp.
What do you like to do outside of work?
When it isn’t freezing I love to spend time outside, hiking, camping and canoeing. During the Calgary winter, you’ll be more likely to find me curled up by the fire with a good book, and a glass of wine. I also love to travel, but it’s been so long since I’ve done that it doesn’t feel right to mention!
If you hadn’t got into your current career… what would you have become?
I wanted to do an art history degree with a specialisation in architecture, however, my Dad talked me into a more practical commerce degree.
What was the last book you read?
The last book I read was The Colony of Unrequired Dreams by Wayne Johnston, he’s a wonderful Newfoundland author.
Film you watched?
I just finished watching the Beatles documentary, Get Back.
The last music you listened to?
After watched Get Back my spouse went down a Beatles rabbit hole, so we’ve been listening to lots of Beatles!
