What do you do at Energy Resourcing?
I work with the back-of-house team in Canada. My focus is our contractor payroll, but I also process our employee payroll and invoicing for receivables.
How did you get into your current career?
I was working in the administration field for the oil and gas sector for over thirteen years and was part of many layoffs and cutbacks several years ago. I took a leap of faith and decided to change what I’d been doing and applied with Energy Resourcing for the current role I have now. It turned out to be the best decision I could have made.
Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?
No specific projects – my role as Payroll Coordinator means there is a payroll every week to complete. But we are always working on ways to improve our processes.
What’s the best part of your role?
I enjoy the customer service I can provide by completing every payroll on time. It may sound nerdy, but I do also love when my balance sheets match exactly!
What is the most challenging part of your role?
Trying to include as many late invoice submissions as I can, so that everyone gets paid.
Any words of advice for young graduates?
Payroll may not be the most glamorous job, but it is a necessary one. If you love numbers and balance sheets, then this might just be an option for you.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love spending time with my grandchildren and family, working in my garden, and of course travelling. Our latest trip was to New York City, and I absolutely loved visiting all those iconic sites.
What was the last book you read?
There is a Canadian author, Faith Wood, who is a suspense/mystery writer – I’ve been reading her series recently.
Film you watched?
‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘A Man Called Otto’.
Music you listened to?
Generally, I like to listen to New Country.
