What do you do at Energy Resourcing?
I’m the UK Financial Controller. I am responsible for all things finance related in the UK, from statutory reporting, management reporting (including budgeting and forecasting) to managing the UK finance team, who in turn are responsible for paying the UK contractors, paying suppliers, invoicing clients and collecting debt.
How did you get into your current career?
I chose CAD Design at uni and realised after one week it was the wrong decision; I left and got an apprenticeship working in various finance roles whilst studying to become an accountant.
Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?
EREUK is becoming a Master Service Provider of contingent labour to Worley this year. I am currently in the process of mapping how the financial setup will look, from contractor timesheet submittal to external agency invoice payment.
What’s the best part of your role?
Being in a position that allows you to see the full picture of the department you work in, not just one element. Supporting the finance team with whatever challenges get thrown their way.
What is the most challenging part of your role?
The sectors we work in coupled with recruitment equals constant change. Every six months there is a new challenge to overcome, whether it be good or bad. You need to be adaptable to work in these sectors.
Any words of advice to young graduates?
Take your time to learn the basics. Experience in finance outweighs qualifications.
What do you like to do outside of work?
If and when I get a half-day to myself, I like to play golf or fall down hills on my mountain bike. Otherwise, it’s going to the gym regularly and playing football once a week.
What was the last book you read?
Never finished a book! Textbooks and children’s books don’t count!
Film you watched?
‘Puss in Boots: The Last Wish’ with my kids.
Music you listened to?
I clubbed in the late 90s early 00s, so dance music preferably – Purple Disco Machine or something with a beat.
