Meet the team: Denise Waal

Name: Denise Waal

Title: HR & CMS Lead

Region: The Hague, Netherlands

Time with company: Since January 2022

What do you do at Energy Resourcing?

At Energy Resourcing I fulfil the role of CMS/HR lead in Europe. I ensure that we work within compliance and do not lose track of candidates and clients, as well as that our processes are well-described and that we have the necessary documentation that clients expect from us.

How did you get into your current career?

Because of my studies, I was introduced to the Personnel and Labor profession, first part-time and then full-time. My foundation for HR and labour law was created whilst working for McDonald’s. I have been able to apply this to every employer I have worked for, and I chose to go into the commercial field because decisions are made at very short notice – you must be flexible when the situation calls for it.

Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?

I’m currently working on improving our internal processes and making sure that we have all the necessary certifications to measure our business strategy.

What’s the best part of your role?

The best part of my role is that I am closely involved in all departments of the organization, which gives me a good overview of where the potential bottlenecks are. This means I can respond better to the needs of ER Europe, which is still growing.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

The challenge is in understanding and pushing changes through. That can take some time. Especially when you work in a fast-growing organisation where the foundations are in place, but the masonry work is still developing. In addition, realising that everyone works differently is not always easy. But as we say in the Netherlands, ‘friction gives luster’, and so that’s how it is with me in the team.

Any words of advice to young graduates?

Especially in Recruitment and HR, you work with people and connect with them personally. Always put yourself in someone else’s shoes and think, ‘this could have happened to me.’ Give everyone space to tell his or her story and then look for an appropriate solution.

What do you like to do outside of work?

Outside of work, I like to work in the garden. I recently built a garden shed where I grow vegetables. I have five rabbits and chickens will arrive in March/April! When there’s better weather, I love to go to the beach and enjoy the sun and the sea.

I also go to the gym three times a week. There I do boxing, power pump and BBB (Belly, Butt, Legs).

My family and friends are very important to me. Their guidance and support are invaluable.

What was the last book you read?

My last book I read was ‘Hoe duur was het suiker’ by Cynthia McLeod and ‘Nieuwe buren’ by Saskia Noort.

Film you watched?

I watch too many movies to mention! Although now I’m trying to focus a bit more on documentaries (I still find them a bit dry, but good) and movies about nature.

Music you listened to?

I like most kinds of music. For example, I listen to classical music – but don’t ask me who the conductor is because I say Mozart or Bach for everything.

When I clean, I can play anything from hard rock to salsa.
