Name: Barry O’Sullivan
Title: Operations Manager
Region: Skellefteå, Sweden
Time with company: Since April 2022
What do you do at Energy Resourcing?
I joined Energy Resourcing in April 2022 as Operations Manager, based in Skellefteå in Northern Sweden. I have helped facilitate the start-up of our Swedish entity and we are now working on some major projects, bringing in candidates from around Europe to this wonderful corner of the world.
How did you get into your current career?
After graduating from RGU, like many I stumbled into recruitment and really enjoyed helping candidates and clients alike. The first 19 years of my career were all in the drilling sector working for agencies and in-house. I spent most of my career in Aberdeen but had two good stints in UAE which involved some interesting trips to India and Bangladesh to assist with operations. When the opportunity came to work with ER in Sweden I jumped at it.
Are you working on any specific projects at the moment?
We are supporting Worley on the US2 project for Northvolt at their Northvolt Ett facility here in Skellefteå, building a manufacturing facility for EV batteries and battery storage. It’s a very exciting project to be part of, and I am personally delighted to be involved in the energy transition.
What’s the best part of your role?
The variety of roles and challenges. No two days are alike. Sweden has embraced the energy transition and there are some very exciting projects on the horizon. Being on the ground with ER Sweden from day one has been very fulfilling, seeing how far we have come. We have a wonderful team here in Sweden and my colleagues throughout Europe are amazing to work with, as well.
What is the most challenging part of your role?
I would say the remoteness of the location. It’s breathtaking but it is quite far north! There is also the perception that Sweden is a high tax jurisdiction. but this is something we take our time to educate candidates and clients on.
Any words of advice for young graduates?
The learning never stops, there are some old dogs out there that can teach you some new tricks.
What do you like to do outside of work?
When I finish my rotation, I like to just spend time with my family. I also love cooking. Anything that takes a long time and involves opening a bottle of red!
What was the last book you read?
‘Chernobyl – History of a Tragedy.’ I usually read non-fiction because I am a massive pub quiz bore!
Film you watched?
I just finished Wild Wild Country, an amazing documentary about a cult that took over a ranch and a town in Oregon. I also just finished the film Roadrunner about Anthony Bourdain; I would have loved to meet him.
Music you listened to?
Every Friday I listen to Long Live House mix by DJ Graeme Park, and on a monthly basis I always listen to Love Groove Dancy Party with Danny Rampling to relive my clubbing days. I have a very eclectic taste in music that ranges from Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden and Guns N’ Roses to traditional Irish music. I always have Taylor Swift and Chvrches on heavy rotation though.
